A Brief Background of Southern Comfort Fitteds (a fitted cloth diaper company)

My husband, George Kane, and myself (Makayla Kane) are the sole owners and operators of the business. We do not have any employees or paid hands. My husband is the my manager, the one I go to for help making business decisions and ideas for the overall well being of SoCo.

However, I happily do #allthethings. Cutting, prepping, sewing, shipping, invoicing, inventory, packaging and more. I am so blessed with a wonderful virtual assistant who has been a loyal customer for almost 6 years. She is amazing with the customers and knows who to take charge in the cloth diaper market. She is good with fabrics, keeping me organized and making sure I am on top of things. You can find Natalia Naletova in our Customs Group (link).

I truly enjoy crafting every single item i make and put my heart and sole into everything I ship out. I love meeting and getting to know so many of you, learning about you and your family, working with beautiful fabrics and heavy duty machines and turning my love for sewing into custom artwork.

Southern Comfort Fitteds was deemed SoCo by fans in 2013, and being that it is a quicker way to refer to the brand name, I will more than likely use the abbreviation throughout content as necessary for reference to Southern Comfort Fitteds.

When SoCo launched in 2012, we only offered one style of cloth diapers, the fitted cloth diaper, and in only one size (a one size fits all). I developed the pattern myself, and began making diapers for my babies.

Word got around, and friends of mine wanted to try them, as well as some of my online community friends. I was excited from the interest and took it as an opportunity to continue to develop my patterns and sewing techniques.

Only charging for cost of supplies, I sent out over 40 diapers for testing. This testing allowed me to create more sizes, better fits and finding better quality fabrics and suppliers over the years.

Today SoCo offers 4 different sizes of fitted cloth diapers, in 3 different styles and 2 different types (Hypro and True Fitted). After listening to you, the customer, over the years I began offering what the market wanted, little by little. Now there is an entire list of clothing items available to you to choose from not only for baby, but for mom and dad too!

So why a blog for SoCo?

Southern Comfort Living is a lifestyle blog in direct connection with Southern Comfort Fitteds. The blog is a supplement to the product store and owned only by myself.

blog

After getting to know you over the years, and understanding the cloth diapering world, the thoughts of expanding even MORE SoCo to you has developed in my mind.

So with years of thinking of ways to give back to my very loyal community, a blog was the perfect plan. With the blog, you will be offered a multitude of content such as:

  • cloth diapering basics beginning to end with tips and tricks such as cloth diapering with daycare,
  • deep details about the brand and products
  • A gallery of your babies in their SoCo as well as product previews for your window shopping
  • An entire collection for sewing tutorials, fabric tutorials and patterns! I know this one you will love, so I cannot wait to pass along my sewing skills to you.
  • Planning, productivity and organization is something I have a deep passion for and have been researching for years. Here I will be able to share with you all of my tips and tricks
  • Parenting, family and motherhood testimonials, a personal look into my life (with vlogs soon to come!) as well as my advice from raising 4 babies all less than 2 years apart.
  • Autism, special needs and ADHD has been a part of my world since my oldest son was born. I’ve learned so much and I want to share my journey with you, offering my some of my research in an easy to understand way
  • And last but definitely NOT least, FREEBIES! FREEBIES FOR EVERYONE! In every single category mentioned above.

As SoCo grows, I only feel it is absolutely imperative to let you get to know the owner behind the scenes to show you my world. Be as truthful and transparent with you about what I have learned along my business owning journey and where we are headed for the future.

The Blog is a dedication to you. To give back and offer you more. Show you my appreciation and respect for your loyalty. It is because of you that SoCo is what it is today and where it will be in the plans that I have.

I am so very grateful to have made it this far when i never imagined this part of life before I had my 3rd baby. I never planned this, i pretty much pulled SoCo out of thin air and went with the flow. So thank you for standing by me, and I hope you enjoy what I am returning to you here in the Southern Comfort Living Blog.

So how do you place an order?

The BST

The best way to try the brand before you invest would be to buy new or used in our buy sale trade group. This gives you the opportunity to get a quick item at a discounted price and find out if you love our brand.

The Website

The website is always adding new items that are ready to ship or available to ship in just a few days. Items available are limited but on the website you will find the meat and potatoes of what is always available. The website gives you an opportunity to window-shop, browse the informational pages and contact SoCo for any questions you may have.

Personal Order

This is the best way to send in your own fabric that you have been hoarding to turn into something you can use. Do you love to sew and just don’t have the time? Maybe you enjoy fabric shopping? I am here to do the magic for you.

There is fabric in stock at the SoCo studio, however we do not keep a fabric album available. The amount of fabric that rotates in and out of the studio is constantly changing.

Most of the time personal orders are available. Sometimes the list is too full and we will close it for a period of time.

To make a personal order, you can purchase the $10 downpayment option on the website. This non refundable purchase holds your place to process your order. After your downpayment is received, you will then get an email directly from me to work out all of the details.

Group Customs

Our popular customs group (almost 2 thousand members) on Facebook is the best way to order as many items as you want in the prints that are offered to you.

A few times a month we choose the most popular prints being processesed from custom fabric printing companies. These prints are not even released yet. Get in on the best prints, and choose every detail of the design you want for your orders.

These prints we offer you in the customs group are called Pre Orders. The fabric that we present are not in the studio. We do not order the fabric until we have closed that pre order. Once the pre order is closed, you will receive an invoice from us, in which only HALF is due upon receipt by a deadline give by us. After all payments are received, it is only then that we purchase the amount of fabric needed for that particular pre order according the items that were purchased by you.

After the fabric is ordered, it can take anywhere from 6-16 weeks before the fabric arrives at the studio. It will always be another 2-4 weeks of processing once I receive the order.

While this is a very timely custom order, it is very popular because of the prints that we offer and that they are not released yet. You also get to design your own items detail by detail.

I always suggest to size UP when placing a PRE ORDER.

The types of fabric in the prints available makes it even better. You can choose minky for blankets, swim knit for UV shirts, woven for diapers or wet bags, sport Lycra for leggings… these are just a drop in the bucket of the different ways you can design your items. (The items listed above, mixed in the prints that you want, in the fabric type that you want, sewn by a professional with the best customer serviced)

What more can you ask for? !
